Community begins with shared experience

The Cure is an invite-only collection of curated culinary services and events to delight, surprise, challenge, and yes, inspire Angelinos burnt out from pandemic, politics, pollution, and too-popular pickle pop-ups. From indulgent morsels of flour and butter to thought-provoking discussions about kindness, trauma, or psychedelics, The Cure will always provide a thoughtful, tasteful tonic for the challenges of 21st century living.

The Cure was born out of a desire to cook up some compassion and civility and foster a stronger sense of comradery in our community. And to inspire a bit of wonder and joy too. Food has always been the centerpiece of shared values—our bodies all share hungers and thirsts, and certainly at this moment, we can all use some help in re-finding connection and communion.

And with the vulnerabilities that have surfaced in this season of Covid, climate change, and the seeming entrenchment of political differences, we can all use a reminder of the healing power of wonderment and surprise and hope.

These are big goals to reach for with nothing but some flour and water (and perhaps a few thrift-store glass vials in unusual colors), but nonetheless, that is what underlies this endeavor.

I’ve always been a storyteller, a magician, a conjurer of mirth and inspiration. And I’ve always found the joy of cooking, of baking, of sharing a meal to be a source of pride and purpose. I can’t help but seek to make every sandwich, every egg, every “elephant shake” perfect; for myself, my 4-year old, or even for a stranger. What balance of flavors and textures and spice and crunch will transport the recipient? What will fill them with that deepest most animal sense of satiation? Can I—if just for a moment—consume the eater completely in the moment, in now, in Zen?

And in looking at the skills and talents I’ve honed in my life, cross referenced against the things that bring me the most joy and fulfillment and healing, I’ve decided to undertake a mission to utilize the potency of breaking bread to build bridges. (And apparently to indulge in endless alliteration…)

I know it’s not new or even unusual to focus on food as fodder for finding and building friendships, but usually said provisions-providers promptly pivot towards profit and growth leaving their inspirational values as mere vestiges. While this endeavor must remain financially self-sustaining to survive (and to provide opportunities to grow and expand our mission), profit is not a primary motive.
